Project Manager and Subject Matter Expert : understanding their roles
In the world of business and technology, the roles of Project Manager (PM) and Subject Matter Expert (SME) are crucial to project's success. Both roles share the common goal of ensuring quality and efficiency. However, their responsibilities, skills and approaches differ significantly.
The orchestra conductor
A Project Manager (PM) is responsible for the initiation, planning, execution, handover to operations and project closure. This role requires a thorough understanding of project management principles, including but not limited to risk management, budget, time, scope, resource planning, and communications. PM occupies a role similar to that of an orchestra conductor, coordinating the efforts of all stakeholders, including internal teams, customers and suppliers, to ensure that the project is delivered on time, on budget and to agreed specifications. The Project Manager's main objective is to keep the project on track, resolving problems and ensuring that project objectives are met.
The specialist advisor
As for the Subject Matter Expert (SME), he or she possesses in-depth, specialized knowledge in a specific field relevant to the project. His (her) role is to provide technical information, advice and solutions to project challenges in this specific field. SMEs are often called upon to contribute to the definition of business vision and requirements, the development of technical design and quality control. They act as advisors, offering expertise that facilitates informed decision-making during the project, and ensures that the solutions developed are viable, effective and innovative. In HRIS projects, the SME may come from a variety of fields, such as payroll, scheduling, human resources, finance, and others, depending on project needs.
The distinction between a PM and a SME lies in their perspective and focus area. Project Managers take an overall view, focusing on the process and the project completion, while SMEs concentrate on the depth of knowledge in their respective fields. PMs are essential for navigating the project management's complexities and ensuring that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together correctly. On the other hand, Subject Matter Experts are indispensable for delving deeper into the technical or specialized aspects of the project, ensuring that the proposed solutions are both feasible, optimal and future-proof.
Hand in hand
Collaboration between PM and SME is essential to ensure the project's success. Project Managers rely on SMEs to make informed decisions and overcome technical obstacles. SMEs, in return, benefit from the structure and guidance provided by PMs to integrate their expertise effectively into the project. Together, they form a dynamic team capable of tackling complex challenges, innovating and delivering successful projects.
