Our client is a large organization in the maritime sector, producing payroll for 4,000 workers in Quebec, Ontario and Eastern Canada, and applying some 30 collective agreements. The payroll system used is SAP.
Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Payroll Manager is responsible for overall control of the payroll function, as well as for the quality of payroll-related services rendered across all the organization's business territories. This is a crucial position when it comes to ensuring legal compliance as applied to the maritime environment.

Main responsibilities
- Oversee the end-to-end payroll process
- Execute the complete payroll process for some territories, as required
- Define policies and processes to enable processing of multiple weekly payrolls
- Ensure compliance and accuracy of payroll results
- Act as an expert on Canadian payroll standards issues
- Manage a multi-province team (approx. 7 employees)
- Conduct performance appraisals, set objectives and provide training and continuous development opportunities
- Collaborate with other departments in the organization to accelerate the achievement of objectives
- Advise customers on the impact of measures they are considering
- Coordinate changes brought about by the renewal of collective agreements
- Manage the organizational impact of customers (mergers/acquisitions) and new members
- Consult tests and approve changes to SAP payroll system
- Follow up on new collective agreements and prepare retroactive payments
- Follow-up on taxable benefits
- Prepare year-end reports related to payroll process
- Oversee the year-end process
- Represent the department in meetings with management
Profile required
- Minimum 10 years' experience in payroll management
- University diploma in administration, accounting or related field, or a combination of education and experience in the relevant field
- Team management experience
- Knowledge of SAP HR Payroll module (an asset)
- National Payroll Institute certification (an asset)
- Bilingual in French and English
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, Outlook
- Comfortable consulting numerous collective agreements
- Ability to communicate detailed information pragmatically with various stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams
- Excellent analytical skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Resilience and adaptability
