Our client is an international engineering firm with close to 1000 employees. The Senior Payroll Technician will be able to work from offices in Quebec City OR downtown Montreal.

Summary

Reporting to the Vice President, Talent and Culture, the Payroll Specialist will play a key role in the efficient and compliant management of the company's payroll. Working with the Payroll and Benefits team of 3 payroll specialists, he/she will be responsible for ensuring accurate, timely processing in compliance with tax and legal regulations for the various offices in Canada, the United States and New Caledonia. This person will also actively contribute to acquisition and integration projects, as well as to the digital transformation of payroll processes.

Please note that the position can be filled at their downtown Montreal or Quebec City offices. However, you will be required to travel once a month to Québec (expenses covered by the employer).

Main responsibilities
  • Ensure that payroll processing in British Columbia and Utah is completed accurately, on time and in compliance with applicable tax and labour laws. Act as a support person for the payroll processing of employees in Quebec, Ontario, Labrador and Alberta.
  • Ensure compliance with tax legislation and labor laws in the various jurisdictions (Canada, United States, New Caledonia) and ensure effective management of reporting obligations and source deductions.
  • Prepare, process and validate all payroll data (timesheets, absences, paid leave, etc.) to ensure accurate accounting of hours worked and leave banks.
  • Manage the administrative and tax aspects of international talent mobility, while ensuring compliance with local and international regulations.
  • Ensure month-end and year-end processes (including the production of records of employment and tax documents), as well as the management of internal and external audits.
  • Actively participate in the integration of new entities during acquisitions, both in Canada and abroad, coordinating payroll-related activities and harmonizing the systems and processes of new entities.
  • Define and propose improvements to payroll systems and processes, particularly in a context of growth and digital transformation.
  • Work closely with the Talent & Culture team, as well as the Finance team, on all payroll-related issues, including benefits management.
  • Train Payroll team members in new practices and regulations. Ensure regular monitoring of legislative and tax changes in all jurisdictions where the company operates.
Profile required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in payroll management, ideally in a Canadian and international context, with proven experience in integrating entities following acquisitions.
  • Mastery of payroll management systems. Experience with ERP/HRIS systems for payroll data integration and processing.
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian payroll laws and familiarity with international regulations (USA).
  • Excellent command of Excel (advanced level) and Microsoft tools, with the ability to manage and interpret complex data. Knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains an asset.
  • Bilingualism French/English.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating cross-functional projects and good teamwork skills.
  • Ability to identify optimization opportunities and implement payroll process automation solutions.
  • Strong sense of confidentiality and employee data protection.
  • Professional certification in payroll management (an asset).
  • Knowledge of HR process automation systems and tools.
